Epilux 8

A high solid, high build, coal tar, epoxy anti-corrosive protective coating.

Berger Epilux 8 is an anti-corrosive protective coating that is ideal for total, partial or intermittent submerged structures, such as pilings, pontoons, jetties, dock gates, concrete pipelines, ballast tanks, etc. It provides outstanding anti-corrosive performance with excellent fresh and seawater resistance and is compatible with cathodic protection. It has good abrasion resistance, and is able to withstand continuous dry heat of up to 100°C and intermittent at 120°C. It can achieve 400 microns dry film thickness in a single coat application.

Surface preparation

Steel

  • This product should be applied to a surface that has been blast cleaned. It can be applied either directly to steel or a suitably primed surface (e.g. Epilux 610 or Zincanode 685).
  • Remove all wax, oil and grease by solvent cleaning as per the guidelines of SSPC-SP1.
  • Where necessary, remove weld spatter and round off all rough weld seams and sharp edges to create a smooth surface.
  • Abrasive blast clean to a minimum standard of Sa2½ (ISO 8501-1:1988) or SSPC-SP10.
  • An average surface profile of 50 to 75 microns is required. Any surface defects revealed by blast cleaning should be ground, filled or treated in a suitable manner.
  • After blasting, remove dust from the surface and ensure that the surface is clean and dry.
  • Apply suitable primer immediately after blasting to prevent oxidation and recontamination of the steel surface. In case of oxidation or recontamination, re-blast until required.

Concrete

  • Ensure that the surface is sound. Remove laitence by thorough wire brushing, acid etching or sweep blasting. Blowholes and other defects should be filled with Solventless Epoxy Filler.

Application procedure

Stir the contents of the can thoroughly before use. Thinning is not usually required. However, if thinning is desired, do not exceed the recommended thinning ratio.
